It's all about the contour cut, or more accurately the layering of sculpting cuts like the contour lines of a map. Here you can see see blanks firstly marked from a fine board of walnut, then stages of 'layer cuts' in order to arrive at the desired seat blank shape. It is 1 thing to draw a line, another to begin cutting away to reveal or 'release' the form within. In order to do this each layer cut is visualised then removed before being layered on to the next set of cuts until eventually - it looks really good. (Subjective, yes), however one instintively knows when something just, looks correct.
In the beginning it's all about trees... Here is a fine board of walnut at the workshop, which will become seat bases for the next pair of chairs in the creation schedule. The following images shows the start of all the components. In this instance, cleaving fine stems of good straight ash.
In order to bake the best cake, one must of course have the best ingredients!
As each stage of test assembly is reached there is the always the longing to reach the next line weight adjustment to get them looking that oh so subjective 'just right'.
Currently now the backs are test fitted the top rear edge profile is to be worked to bring in that subtle 'earth curve & fall' that really takes the seat plane to another level. You can probably also see in the images that the front leading edges are still to be worked when these images were taken. Arms should arrive in place by early next week.
And you can just see 'Rollog' in the bottom left in 2 of the image!
The lovely plastic & bubble wrap leg warmers are to prevent glue splashes running down the pristine legs.
Next comes final fine finishing & 1st oil.
Here are also a couple of pics of the 1st oil on the upper section of 'Moon rising over Misty mountain' - another exceptional piece of walnut in the back rest & that amazing American quilted maple seat.. It gives a good idea as to how the rich deep oiled walnut will look on the seat of Lobo Loi.
This chair will be finally assembled during the early part of next week.
We are currently bringing up 2 new chairs one of which is this rather pleasing low bow back chair design from the Landscape of invention. Features a beautiful figured walnut seat. All other components in that wonderous ash. You can also see Murray in action in the 2nd from left image working on the fine finishing of the back of the Guitarist's chair - 'Moon rising over Misty Mountain'. This peice is now nearing completion with all legs cut & test fitted now awaiting final assembly.
